Discrimination, Hate Speech and the Media
Hrant Dink Foundation visited Giresun University, Communication Faculty in Giresun with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation on November 15. The meetings with scholars which aimed to promote the prepared draft syllabus entitled “Discrimination, Hate Speech and the Media” within the scope of the Media Watch on Hate Speech Project of the Hrant Dink Foundation, was organized. In addition to meetings with scholars, two seminars were organized with the participation of students from several departments. In this seminar, the project team presented the project’s aims, the methodological transformations it went through and its general findings. Following the seminars, with the participation of a narrower group of students from different departments, the 4th Interactive Workshop on Selected News Items of 2017 held under the facilitation of Mahmut Çınar. The focus was on the role of the media in the production of discriminatory discourse concerning refugees, women and LGBTI people and how to create an alternative language in order to counter this discourse.
