P24 Holds Digital Media and Labor Journalism Workshop in Bursa


Platform for Independent Journalism (P24) held a workshop on digital media and labor journalism April 14, 2018, in Bursa for local journalists, citizen journalists, communication students and NGO representatives. Marking the first of a series of workshops supported by Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, the event was organized at the Campus of Associations of Nilüfer Municipality to build on the workshop held last year at the same venue.

Dr. Erkan Saka, lecturer at Bilgi University in Istanbul and one of the pioneers of new media studies in Turkey, presented an overview of the evolution of journalism with the development of digital technologies. Digital communication expert Kenan Dursun introduced digital tools such as applications, websites and social media channels that would help journalists at every stage of reporting, from writing s news story to editing, publishing and disseminating them on different online platforms. For his part, IT expert Şevket Uyanık focused on digital security, sharing best practices and tips that would allow journalists to prevent any possible security breach.

Bursa being one of the major industrial cities of Turkey, journalist Gülşen İşeri made a presentation about the basic principles to sustain rights-based reporting on the field of labor journalism. İşeri, who has covered news concerning labor and urban transformation projects for more than 10 years, also described how to report on human interest stories and discussed the possibilities for free-lance journalists to specialize on those themes.
