WORKSHOPS ON DISCUSSION OF NEWS ITEMS- II: “A New Dialogue on Hard Topics”
Organized by the Media Watch on Hate Speech Project, the workshop titled ‘A new dialogue on hard topics' was held on Tuesday, July 10 with the contributions of Friedrich Naumann Foundation. The workshop focused on gaining experience with the power of questions to invite understanding and connections between the asked and the asker.
The workshop was held in Hrant Dink Foundation, Anarad Hığutyun Building and facilitated by John Sarrouf from Essential Partners, an organization conducts dialogue workshops to encourage empathy and curiosity among people and groups in a conflict. Apart from John Sarrouf and project team, eighteen people, including journalists, photographers, documentarists, academics, civil society and private sector employees participated in the workshop.
At the workshop, John Sarrouf firstly conveyed the methods of transitioning from a vicious circle to a constructive dialogue without polarization during the communication. Then the participants did group exercises that enables a safe space for dialogue by encouraging curiosity, commonalities and connections between the differences. Moreover, the power of listening, questions and the way they are asked were touched upon as they have potential to transform interactions and significant in order to build a peaceful dialogue. Finally, questioning and dialogue exercises with a focus on strengthening coexistence culture were done by the participants.
